On June 22, 1941, Germany invaded the territory of the USSR with the expectation of a rapid military campaign, but met with strong resistance from Soviet troops. The war dragged on for several years and ended with the complete defeat of Germany. On May 8, 1945, the act of its surrender was signed. The Soviet Union suffered enormous human and economic losses, but its victory in the Great Patriotic War, which came at such a high price, played a decisive role in defeating Nazism throughout the world and predetermined the outcome of the Second World War.
